The Reading At Home (RAH) program is a voluntary program sponsored by the Briarwood PTA. It is designed to encourage both students and adults to establish a positive attitude toward reading. Reading together is lots of fun and builds wonderful memories too! Each student who participates in the RAH program will receive monthly incentives.
The program will run from October 1 to May 31. At the beginning of each month, every student will be given a calendar to keep track of their time spent reading. Calendars can also be printed off from the website - CLICK HERE for a list of calendars. Reading must be done outside of the school day and includes books, magazines, newspapers, reading for book reports and/or homework. Reading can be done alone or with an adult, sibling or friend and includes having someone read to you!
Students will log the minutes they spend reading each day on their calendars. At the end of the month, they will total up their minutes, have a parent sign the calendar, and return it to their teacher by the due date shown on the calendar. Each student who meets or exceeds the monthly reading goal will receive the monthly incentive. Reading goals by grade are as follows:
KINDERGARTEN through SECOND GRADE
October through December- 200 minutes or more each month
January through March- 250 minutes or more each month
April through May- 300 minutes or more each month
THIRD GRADE through FIFTH GRADE
October through December- 400 minutes or more each month
January through March- 450 minutes or more each month
April through May- 500 minutes or more each month
In addition to the monthly prize incentives, the classroom with the most student participation will receive a popcorn party at the end of the year! And just like last year, the University Masonic Lodge #141 of Seattle has generously donated two new bikes that will be given away in June. The students will be entered into the prize drawing for the bikes for every 400 minutes read in grades K-2 and 800 minutes read in grades 3-5.
Reading opens up new worlds, ideas and images to our children. We look forward to your participation in this fun and educational program.
